As it turns out, I could get there either way but on this particular trip, about two miles out of Ladonia, I saw a sign that immediately caught my attention. The book focuses on the first twenty linear miles of the river channel in northeast Texas, long known to be a fossil collector's treasure trove for Late Cretaceous and Pleistocene vertebrate and invertebrate fossils.5/5.
I raised my five children in the community. One of our favorite family hangouts is the North Sulphur River. The North Sulphur River is full of Cretaceous marine fossils. Clovis Era (11,–11, BC) and Dalton Era (– BC) stone tool artifacts are also commonly found in the riverbeds. I take my grandchildren fossil hunting there now too.

Ladonia Fossil Park is a project of the City of Ladonia, Texas and is located two miles north of downtown Ladonia on Highway 34 north and west of the bridge spanning North Sulphur River.
The park sits on the bank of the vast river channel and provides an entrance into hunting grounds that have yielded a variety of fossils from the Cretaceous. For those contemplating going into the North Sulphur River to hunt for fossils, I’d like to share some photos and a couple of tips for you.

The North Sulphur River in southeast Fannin County is noted for Cretaceous Period marine megafossils such as mosasaurs and plesiosaurs and for Ice Age fossils such as mammoths and mastodons. Ladonia Fossil Park (aka Pete Patterson Fossil Park) is located just north of Ladonia where highway 34 crosses the North Sulphur River.
Fossil Butte preserves a small portion of the enormous Green River Formation, an ancient freshwater lakebed some 50 million years old (Eocene). On Fridays and Saturdays during summer, visitors can help park scientists dig for fossils on a strictly catch-and-release basis.
